Charging your electric car with solar power: how to do it properly

Charging your electric car with solar power: how to do it properly

Pure solar mode vs. mixed mode

In pure solar mode, the charger only starts when there is enough surplus. In mixed mode, it tops up with power from the grid to make sure the car is charged by a set time.

How much power you need

A 7.4 kW single-phase charger adds around 40 km of range per hour — more than enough for daily use with overnight charging.

Integration with the system

The wallbox should communicate with the inverter and the energy meter. Without that integration, charging can trip the main breaker or draw power from the grid unnecessarily.
