Huawei, Sungrow or Victron: which inverter is right for you?

We work with all three brands every month. This is the comparison we make internally before recommending anything — with no commercial favouritism.

All the brands compared have efficiencies above 97% (Victron's is lower because it is designed for off-grid use). Over the annual output of a home installation, the difference between 97.8% and 98.6% amounts to a few euros a year — it should not be the deciding factor.

Huawei

Strengths

  • Complete ecosystem: inverter, battery, optimisers and wallbox
  • Panel-level monitoring with fault detection
  • Solid service network in Portugal

Worth bearing in mind

  • Above-average price
  • Less flexible with third-party batteries

Sungrow

Strengths

  • Excellent value for money
  • Very wide range, from residential to industrial
  • Robust three-phase backup on the SH-RT models

Worth bearing in mind

  • App less feature-rich than Huawei's
  • Panel-level optimisers are not standard

Victron Energy

Strengths

  • Legendary reliability off-grid
  • Integrates generator, grid and solar without limitations
  • Parts and firmware available for decades

Worth bearing in mind

  • Lower efficiency in pure self-consumption
  • Setup requires an experienced installer

The Hybrid Solar Solutions recommendation

There is no single best inverter for every project. If what you value most is panel-by-panel monitoring, Huawei is the best choice; for commercial installations above 50 kW, Sungrow scales better and keeps a competitive cost per kW; and in a fully stand-alone, critical system, Victron remains the benchmark. We recommend equipment according to the consumption profile and the type of installation — we would rather tell you this than sell you the wrong equipment.

Verdict

The right choice depends on your profile, not on the brand

A summary of the recommendations we give on our site visits, by type of project.

A house with a battery and backup — the most common case in Portugal

Sungrow

It covers the typical scenario with a hybrid battery inverter and a built-in backup output, at a competitive cost per kW and with a stable app for keeping track of production.

Three-phase business with high daytime consumption

Sungrow

Above 50 kW, the SG-RT range scales better and keeps a very competitive cost per kW in large commercial installations.

Anyone who values panel-by-panel monitoring above all else

Huawei

With optimisers, FusionSolar shows output module by module and detects shading or dirt. It makes a difference on complex roofs — and you pay for it.

Fully stand-alone system, boat or motorhome

Victron Energy

In installations with no grid at all as a safety net, Victron remains the benchmark for managing solar, batteries and generator.
