Solar energy in the Algarve: the best sun in Portugal, sized for your home

The Algarve produces around 12% more energy per panel than central Portugal. But a holiday home, a holiday rental and a villa with a pool are not sized the same way — and that is where the investment is won or lost.

Four Algarve homes, four different system sizes

Elsewhere in Portugal the question is “how much do you use”. In the Algarve there is a second one: “when is the house occupied”. The answer changes the number of panels, decides whether a battery pays off and avoids the region's most common mistake — filling the roof and then selling the output to the grid for a fraction of the price.

Permanent home

Air conditioning from May to October, the pool pump, hot water. Consumption is high and happens during the day, when the panels are producing — the scenario where solar pays best in Portugal.

We size on summer consumption and schedule the big loads for the sunny hours.

Holiday home

Occupied three or four months a year, empty the rest. A large system produces all year for a house that is not there, and the surplus is paid at a fraction of the purchase price.

A smaller system, usually without a battery, and surplus sales registered so the output is not wasted.

Holiday rental (alojamento local)

Peak consumption — guests, air conditioning, laundry — coincides with peak production. Out of season the logic reverses. We work with the real occupancy of your listing, not a national average.

Sized on the real average consumption of your occupancy — not the August peak — with the return calculated on the nights you actually sell.

Hotels and restaurants

Kitchens, refrigeration, pools and climate control draw power during the day, every day. It is the case where the return usually needs no storage — and where sizing on real consumption is worth more than covering the whole roof.

What changes

What is different about an installation in the Algarve

Salt, chlorine and steam

The whole coast is a saline environment, and in many homes pool chlorine adds to it. We use A4 stainless steel and anodised aluminium without exception, and the connectors stay out of reach of the sea air.

Flat roofs and terraces

Much of the housing stock has flat roofs. Ballasted mounting avoids piercing the waterproofing, but it means checking the slab's load capacity before going ahead — and we do that on the site visit.

Heat

A panel loses output as it heats up, and an Algarve roof in August passes 60 °C. That is why we prefer N-type cells, which lose less power with heat than P-type cells.

The pool and the air conditioning as allies

The pool pump is the easiest load to move: scheduled for the middle of the day, it uses energy that would otherwise go to the grid. The air conditioning does the same by itself — it asks for the most exactly when there is the most sun.

Little shade, plenty of orientation

Low relief and clear skies give the Algarve the best irradiation on the mainland. We use east/west orientations when south is not available: the difference in yield is smaller than people think, and the daily profile is actually more balanced.

Our base is in Condeixa-a-Nova, about 400 km from the Algarve. We are not a local installer and we do not pretend to be: what we do is plan the work in blocks so the distance does not show in the result.

    Remote study

    With your bill, your address and satellite imagery we do the first sizing and the proposal without anyone travelling. Within 24 working hours you have concrete numbers.

    Scheduled site visit

    We group our Algarve visits on set dates. We measure the roof, the consumer unit and the cable run, and we confirm the slab load on terraces.

    The equipment arrives before the team. A villa is finished in one or two days; a hotel or a larger rental, in a week. The DGEG registration (the DGEG is the Portuguese energy authority) and the grid connection are handled by us.
